The adventures and legacy of the Hiking Club began with its inception in 1949. It is one of the oldest mountaineering clubs of India, second only to the Himalayan Club in Bombay.
Though it was first introduced to expose students to the adventure-filled world of outdoor activities, it soon evolved to include serious mountaineering expeditions. Many of these were undertaken under the guidance of the late Balbir Singh, from the Department of Economics, who was the staff advisor through the 1960s.
Over the years, the Hiking Club has produced legends who have carried the mantle of the club while giving us wonderful stories to pass down to the younger members of the club. In recent years, the emphasis of our activities has shifted somewhat, from high-altitude climbing to trekking, but it has been the intention of the present members to revive this tradition. The Club remains committed to introducing its members to a wide-range of adventure sports.
The Rohan Kanhai Dutta and Sunil Chandra Memorial National Climbing Competition (NCC) is the flagship event of the Hiking Club conducted during the even semester. Athletes and climbers from across the country compete in this event, including competitors from the Indian Military Team and the Indian National Climbing Team.
From treks to climbing outings; from pushing each other to complete workout sets to pulling each other to the highest of peaks, the Hiking Club truly gives you the thrill, adventure and camaraderie expected of a college life.
