GANDHI AMBEDKAR STUDY CIRCLE

About us-
Gandhi Ambedkar Study Circle is a student-run collective that seeks to critically engage with the issues of caste, class and gender and their intersections along with the analysis of diverse themes through these frameworks by conducting reading sessions, panel discussions, talks and other events.

Our Events-
Satya is the annual fest of the Gandhi Ambedkar Study Circle, which is usually held in the month of February. During our fest, we look forward to critically engage with our themes through lectures, panel discussions and cultural programmes. The 2022 Satya Fest had Prof. Irfan Habib as the keynote speaker and the theme was ‘India for the People’. It was a three-day fest featuring panellists such as Prof. Satyaki Roy, Prof. Nandini Sundar, Prof. Rajni Palriwala, Prof. Ania Loomba and Prof. Nitasha Kaul. The fest also featured the film screening of Arvind Narayan Das’s ‘India Invented’ and Jana Natya Manch’s ‘Safdar’. It also featured a cultural performance by Rahul Rajkhowa.

Satyam Jha Memorial Discussion
Previously known as Dialogo, the Satyam Jha Panel Discussion is an annual event organised in the memory of Satyam, a friend, a classmate, a fellow council member, and most of all, a very enthusiastic and selfless student of History and Politics. Satyam not only had immense love for academic and non-academic literature on caste, gender, class and society, he remained selflessly engaged in groundwork until the very end. During the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, Satyam worked as a volunteer arranging for leads on gas cylinders, hospital beds and other emergency supplies and saved numerous lives. This annual panel discussion seeks to keep alive his memory and his ideals and is organised every year on 20th of January, on the occasion of Satyam’s birthday. Through student led panel discussions, we want to make a point that to be heard one does not need to carry the credentials of an academician. In 2023, it was a three-day event featuring themes ‘Navigating Life in Conflict Zones’, ‘Love in times of Communal Politics’, ‘Queer Identities and Mental Health Issues’.

Talks and Lectures
The Gandhi Ambedkar Study Circle regularly invites distinguished speakers to deliver talks and lectures on the intersections of caste, class, gender and other key contemporary social issues. The last talk of the year 2022 was delivered by Prof. Ajay Gudavarthy and Prof. Maya John.

Reading Sessions and Group Discussions
The Gandhi Ambedkar Study Circle organises group discussions and reading sessions on academic and non-academic texts to engage with issues plaguing the world at large and India in particular.

Cultural Events
The society believes that ‘culture’ is one of the most efficient modes of reaching out to a wider audience. The Gandhi Ambedkar Study Circle strives to organise events that allow opportunities for exposure to cultural material and narratives beyond the finite realm of academia.

Satya Journal and Blog Syahi
Through our journal and blog, we seek to achieve our aims by publishing both academic and non- academic pieces. We hope to be more inclusive of the entire students’ community. We encourage dialogic, polemical and discursive debates, deliberations and discussions around the themes that we concern ourselves with. The theme for the 2022 edition was ‘Culture as a mode of Resistance’.
