FOOTBALL TEAM


The popularity of Football in college has grown in the last few years and it has attracted the girls in college to take up the game. In 2014-15 the interested students got together to learn the skills and a Morning Coaching Programme was introduced where the Department of Physical Education took the responsibility to introduce the game in the form of play.

In 2015-2016 the Department that this recreational activity needed to be given a better platform and therefore the group was given the opportunity to play friendlies against girls teams in and around Delhi. These were organized to enable the girls learn and develop playing ability apart from giving them valuable match-like experiences. While some of the results were favorable, the losses left the group with lessons on how to better their playing ability.

St Stephen’s College Invitational Women’s Football Festival

As the group did not have enough players to play the regular Delhi University organized events like the Inter Collegiate Competitions, a Women’s Football Festival was organized from 28th to 31st March 2016 in the college.

This festival was open to colleges and teams that were popularizing the game within Amateurs. A Total of Six teams participated in the Festival. The results of the host team are as given below:

Football (Men)

The St Stephen’s College’s Men team is another hard working squad of the boys that has caught the attention of the college due to a string of successes last year and most importantly the inclusive policy that forms the basic philosophy of team building. The team comprises of 75 percent of the side who are non-sports merit admission but work hard on the college grounds under the tutelage and training of the Department of Physical Education.

Inter College Competition

In the Inter College Football Tournament, organized by the University of Delhi at the Polo Grounds, in November 2015, the college team made an early exit due to a first round loss to the Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education and Sports Sciences (IGIPESS), Delhi. The nail-biting fixture witnessed the college team take the lead and then unfortunately losing the game in the final five minutes.

Inter Varsity Selections:

Dilsher Singh Sandhu of II B.A (Prog) continued to be the shining hope of the team as he continued with his impressive performance of last year as he was a member of the Delhi University Football Team for the second year in a row. He was also among the final 25 shortlisted for the prestigious Santosh Trophy but could not replicate his final selection for the Delhi State Team as he had done in 2014-15. The college also suffered a serious blow as he was unable to play for the college in tournaments apart from the Inter College due to a serious ankle injury.

State Level

The college boys continued their good form on the grounds across Delhi and the NCR. The Delhi Soccer Association affiliate Clubs promoting Semi Professional, Professional and Amateur players have been scouting talented players across the University. It is a matter of immense pride that Rohan Shane Pereira of IInd Year History has been taken as player by Young Men Football Club. The Young Men FC finished III in the Super League of the DSA Championship – for Senior Division.

Dilsher Singh Sandhu of IInd Year B.A Prog has been taken as player by Shastri Football Club. The Shastri FC is a registered clubin the Super League of the DSA Championship – for Senior Division.

In the SRCC Invitational Football Tournament held in Feb 2016, the college had an impressive record as given below:

1st Match :  St Stephens College 3-0 SSB College
2nd Match: St Stephens College 1-0 Hindu College
3rd Match: St Stephens College 2-0 Kirori Mal College

Semi Final:

St Stephens College 1-1 Sri Venkateshwara College

Match decided on Penalties where Sri Venkateshwara College won 4-3

The College Team took part in the VIPS Invitational Football Tournament organized at the DDA Sports Complex in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi, in February 2016. The team’s performance had made them the favorites to claim the championship title, but the run came to a halt when four of its main players were injured. This heavy causality resulted in the team bowing out to Shivaji College by a solitary Goal in the Semi Final Round.

St Stephen’s College Invitational Inter College Football Tournament 2015-16.

The College organized the IInd edition of the St Stephen’s College Invitational Football Tournament for Men from 17th March to 22nd March 2016. A total of 8 teams were invited in the tournament.

St. Stephen’s College emerged Champions beating the College Alumni Team in the final.

This Victory was a cherished episode for the college as this is the first time that the College team has won the Championship Title of the home tournament.

The self-motivated and ceaseless activities of over two dozen clubs and societies constitute a very important part of College life and offer a large variety of avenues for self expression. For each subject there is a Society that sponsors extra-curricular lectures and discussion and, in general, tries to stimulate interest in the subject. There are many other academic and cultural society and clubs covering wide range of activities, such as debating, dramatics, mountaineering, film and music appreciation, social service, photography and electronics.
