ST. STEPHEN’S CENTRE FOR LANGUAGES
St. Stephen’s Centre for Languages, formerly known as School of Languages, is a self-financing Centre which has become an integral part of the College in the last ten years. The Centre intends to promote the study of various languages, literatures and cultures. At present, the focus is on the study of languages. However, research on literatures and cultures has been introduced as an important constituent of the Centre from the academic session 2015-16. The Centre is constituted by two schools: School of Germanic and Romance Studies and School of Asian Studies.
The School of Germanic and Romance Studies (SGRS) offers Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma in German, French, Spanish, and Italian. All the courses under the SGRS are affiliated to the Department of Germanic and Romance Studies, University of Delhi. Qualified faculty registered at the GRS Department of the University offer the various levels of language courses.
The School of Asian Studies (SAS) offers Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Chinese Japanese, Sanskrit, Urdu and Persian. Certificate Course in Chinese and Japanese are affiliated to the Department of East Asian Studies, University of Delhi. The Centre has got approval from the EAS Department and the Academic Council of the University to affiliate Diploma and Advanced Diploma levels of these languages to the University in the coming years. It has also get approval for running Korean courses which will begin from the next academic session (2016-17) onwards. St. Stephen’s College runs Certificate courses in Sanskrit, Urdu and Persian courses as these departments are two among the constituent departments of the College.
